February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month!

(02/05/2015) By: T. Rymer

Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner each year. One in three teens in the US is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a partner. While teen dating violence can happen to anyone, loveisrespect.org reports that girls and young women between the ages of 16 and 24 experience the highest rate of intimate partner violence- almost triple the national average.

Get involved!
February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness & Prevention Month (TDVAM), a national effort to highlight the need to educate young people about dating violence, teach healthy relationship skills and prevent the devastating cycle of abuse. Safe Nest is working together with our local schools and our very own SAFE Outreach Group to promote teen dating violence awareness and prevention. SAFE is made up of a group of young volunteers specifically trained to empower youth to end domestic violence. About 72% of eighth and ninth graders are “dating”. It is vital that we educate our youth at a young age about the signs of abuse and the skills to maintain healthy relationships.

What is your role for TDVAM? Get the facts. Learn the warning signs and how to respond. Start talking. Raising awareness of dating violence is the first step towards ending it. Connect online.
